Bushings are responsible for the steering behavior of the trucks. Of course, the factor of the axle geometry plays an important role as well, which is why you should think about what requirements they should meet before buying new trucks. All trucks have integrated bushings. However, with frequent use or incorrect application, these can become worn or cracked, which has a negative effect on the steering performance. Usually, the brands integrate bushings in medium hardness in their trucks. But for some skateboarders these are too hard or too soft, which is why brands like Bones, Thunder or Independent offer bushings in various grades of hardness and colors. At Freedom Skateshop you will find a large selection of bushings in all variations, sizes and degrees of hardness.
Bushings are located on the kingpin, between the baseplate of the truck and the kingpin nut, with which you can adjust the steering hardness by tightening or loosening. As a beginner, it is recommended to first try out the standard bushings integrated when buying new trucks. Over time, skateboarders develop personal preferences regarding the adjustment of their trucks. It is important not to immediately tighten the Kingpin nut too much, because the bushings must first be somewhat worn in. A steady readjustment is a sure way to prevent new bushings from being overstressed and tearing.
The hardness of the bushings is given in durometers in the measurement unit "A" or "D". The larger the number, the harder your bushings are. 88 A, for example, are very soft bushings, which are recommended for people with very light body weight. 101 A, on the other hand, ensure that the trucks only turn in under strong force and weight. Medium bushings, which are also standard in skateboard trucks, have a hardness of 92-95 A. The advantage of medium bushings is that you can influence the steering behavior by tightening or loosening the kingpin nut much better than with very soft or hard bushings.
Washers are the small metal disks that are mounted between the baseplate and the kinpin nut to protect your bushings. Some brands include them with the purchase of new bushings, otherwise we offer washers for individual purchase. Bones Bushings are protected at the tips with a hard plastic layer, which is why you can use these bushings without additional washers.
